NW Briefs | Seattle U. out of soccer tourney
Cal State Los Angeles took second seed Seattle University to a shootout Sunday in the Far West Region final of the NCAA Division II women’s soccer tournament and beat the Redhawks 4-2 to advance to the regional final against Seattle Pacific.
The game was scoreless until each team scored in the second and third rounds of the shootout; Cal State also converted in the fourth round. The Golden Eagles’ Liz Franco clinched it in the fifth.
Seattle U. finishes the 2007 season with a 17-3-1 record, including a 12-2 record in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
Cal State LA (13-5-4) plays the Falcons in the regional final at 7 p.m. Thursday at Interbay Stadium.

Danesha Adams scored twice in the opening 11 minutes to lead UCLA to a 3-0 victory over Washington in the teams’ final regular-season game at Husky Soccer Field.
The Bruins (16-1-2, 9-0) won their third consecutive Pac-10 championship. Washington (5-13-1, 2-6-1) finished seventh in the conference.
• Carly Dobratz netted the game-winner in the second half to lift Washington State past USC 2-1 at Lower Soccer Field.
In defeating the Trojans (14-3-2, 6-2-1 Pac-10), the Cougars (11-5-3, 4-4-1) broke a 13-match losing streak against top-five opponents. USC entered Sunday ranked fourth by Soccer Buzz.
WSU’s Kiersten Dallstream tapped in an assist from Dobratz to open scoring, and USC pulled even at 23:27 when Ashley Nick’s header was tipped by WSU senior goalkeeper Brynn Bemis, then ricocheted off the cross bar and was headed in by Amy Rodriguez.
• Fourth-ranked Puget Sound defeated 11th-ranked Whitworth 2-1 in the second round of the NCAA Division III championship in Tacoma. Katie Gillette and Adrienne Folsom scored for Puget Sound; Penelope Crowe scored for Whitworth (18-3).
The Loggers (20-1-1) face Wartburg College of Waverly, Iowa, in the round of 16. The date and site of the sectional match will be announced today.
MEN’S SOCCER
Ely Allen’s two goals led Washington to a 4-2 victory over Stanford in a Pac-10 game at Husky Soccer Field. Allen recorded an assist on Ellis McLoughlin’s goal; Matt Van Houten and Alex Kozachenko also scored for UW. Washington (8-7-2, 3-4-1 Pac-10) is fourth in the conference. Stanford fell to 6-6-5, 3-4-2.
• Tannen Wels scored the lone goal of the match against short-handed Gonzaga to give the University of San Diego a 1-0 West Coast Conference victory at Torero Stadium. The Bulldogs (9-5-4, 4-3-4) fell into fourth place in the WCC standings.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
The Huskies captured each of the three singles flights on the final day of the Husky Invitational at Nordstrom Tennis Center.
Venise Chan won the No. 1 singles flight, taking out teammate Tara Simpson in the all-Huskies final, 6-3, 6-2. Paired with Aleksandra Malovic, Chan won the No. 1 doubles title 8-3 over Simpson and Joyce Ardies.
Malovic took the flight 2 singles final 6-4, 6-3 over Stacey Housley of Boise State.
Ashley Anderson earned a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Portland’s Katie Kennel in the flight 3 final.
