60th anniversary of Spruce Goose’s flight
On Nov. 2, help celebrate the 60th anniversary of “the flight” - the one-minute flight of the legendary Spruce Goose “flying boat,” which skeptics said would never get airborne. To prove them wrong, the aircraft’s designer, Howard Hughes, piloted the huge wooden cargo plane with a wingspan longer than a football field across the Long Beach, Calif., harbor on Nov. 2, 1947, for its only flight. Experts on Hughes and the Spruce Goose will give presentations throughout the day at Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum, the aircraft’s permanent home in McMinnville, Ore.
